The Husqvarna 701 has Adventure Bike Written All Over It!!!
I wanted to see if the Husky 701 could serve as an adventure bike. So I went on a 300 mile, 12 hour adventure ride in the Rocky Mountains to test out its adventure bike chops, and I wasn't disappointed as you will see in the video. If you want to see what the bike is capable of in the adventure bike category, check out the video. Leave a comment on what you think, and as always, if you like the video, be sure to leave thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe to the channel.

I had the great fortune this week to spend some time on the 2024 KTM 1390 Super Duke. There have only been a handful of these bikes delivered to the US so far so getting the opportunity to take this bike out and see how it performs was a fantastic. The bike is everything we've come to expect from the SDR and in many ways, just a bit better. Thanks so much to my friends @faymyersdenver for givin...

I totally agree I be dropping to 16 once the chain sprocket worn 11k mikes on clock should be to long now . Shame have to lower 123rd too . I think ktm addressed the 5&6th to high
I’ve owned both an 800gs and 1200gs, and now I’ve got a 701 LR. For me it is the unicorn. I have a windshield on it because the weather in Sweden can be quiet rainy… So with a Giant Loop bag, larger fotpegs and 6,6 gallons of fuel I will reach about 300 miles of range. I can live with some lack of comfort when the handling of pavement is so much better due to heavier bikes. Thanks for great videos! Cheers from Sweden.🍻😃🇸🇪
I sold my GS for a 701 recently, and for me, the 701 is the unicorn. 100% doable on highway, and an absolute blast off road..
I’ve just returned home (UK) from a 23 day, 4,200 mile ride from Boston area down to Tennessee and up to the Canadian border and back to Boston. We rode on TAT and BDR trails where possible. I rode a 2019 KTM 690 Enduro R with Nomad Tower, Rade Garage range extender tank and Seat Concepts seat. Utterly superb. It was the perfect bike for our mix of riding. I find that it will pull lower revs but more throttle which is probably the weak fuelling that these bikes come with. The quickshifter made it easy to find the perfect ratio and never annoyed me. The TC kept me on the trails without a doubt. My old buddy who actually made the whole trip happen rode a Tiger 900 Rally. It was also excellent in his hands. I would certainly have struggled with the weight. That, for me, is the key. I bought a 701 here on the strength of my experience on the 690 and will sell my 890. It’s just too much for my needs. Cheers, Ian

If you run with a pack and have big bikes those tracks are just fine. If you are a lone wolf who is not capable of picking one of those water buffaloes up 100% of the time, the answer is no, don't do it. Get a lighter bike.
I had a KTM 1290 SAR and now a Husky 701. The 1290 was an Adventure bike and the 701 is a Dual Sport. You can do hard muddy trails with the 1290 and long road rides with the 701 but neither of those scenario's are very enjoyable.
I've got a 17 690 with a Yenkro tower/fairing, Safari Tank, Renazco seat, etc, etc. I love it, have taken it all over Colorado, slab, super slab, double track, BDR, Alpine Loop, etc. That said, it is NOT an "adventure" bike, it's a great dual sport. Those other bikes have more power, more options, more comfort, more carrying capacity, you name it. They're also much heavier and a lot harder to deal with off road, which is where the 690/701 shine. Pick your poison.
Great summary! Very easy gearing reduction is to put a 13 tooth in front, you don't need to touch the chain or remove the rear wheel, plus it's cheaper.
Good point about it being cheaper to just replace the countershaft sprocket, but I think you lose too much top end by doing that. But you're right, it will fix up the lag issue in a hurry. Cheers!
As dual sport it's great option, but i think it's not so great an "adventure" bike. Mainly because of the seat being so flat and sporty for long rides on tarmac and because that 701 cc engine is single cylinder. I rided 401 husky and after 30 minutes my hands felt vibration like i was working with drill all day. and that is 400cc single cylinder. I think for adventuring unless you need to be 70-90% off road twin engine is way better option because there are way less vibrations.
Yes the seat is definitely a problem as an adventure bike goes. You would need to change it out. Long rides on tarmac would not be ideal either but it can be done.
I'd rather a DR650.
As somebody who put about 5k miles on a DR650, I loved that bike but I've put almost 5k miles on my 701 and it's much better at pretty much everything. I know Austrian bikes don't really have the reliability reputation but this engine is pretty solid. If I was going to remote places in like South America I'd consider switching back to a DR or XR for the sake of simplicity. But this machine is pretty damn solid.
I have two different LC motors. The LC8 in my Super Duke and the LC4 in my 701. I agree with you, the Austrians have a well deserved reputation for being unreliable but I believe that was all in the past. They are having a hard time shaking that stigma of being unreliable and it will probably be some time before it goes away. However, both my LC motors have been nothing but top notch and super reliable so far. With respect to the LC4 motor in the 701, I don't believe it is any less simplistic then the others out there like the Suzuki's or Honda's. It's just a much more performance oriented machine that spends a lot of time in the high end of the rev's and has a ton of power so it is going to malfunction more often then the Japanese bikes. But I don't think it is really much more complicated then any other bikes. In my opinion, the more frequent mechanical issues are a small price to pay for the incredible boost in performance that you get from the Husky. There are always gonna. be those who parrot the same old line about the bikes being unreliable, and I don't think there is anything we can do about that. Hell, American cars got a well earned reputation for being unreliable in the 80's because they were just junk for the most part, and 40 years later, people still talk about them like they are still not as reliable as Japanese cars, and that just isn't true anymore.
701 my 2019 (euro 4), 953 h, 52'910 km / 32'900 miles here. much less vibration than the euro 3 engine. i am with you: i own only one bike; and it is the lightest street legal enduro here in switzerland. two sets of wheels (1 x road oriented, 1 x hard enduro tyres). longest trip so far: 9'073 km / 5'640 miles to the nordkap and back. the gears are narrow, but on the other side one can rev to 9k, which is nice. for long trips with a lot of road connections i use the standard gearing (15/46), i install 16/49 which is the same as standard and drop the front sprocket to 15 when i go in to harder terrain. low rev riding: i had to adapt my decades old low-rev-thumper-riding-style; since it is a big bore/short stroke engine, that's normal. you can use and modify a 76506102000, Airbox Cover, Ktm, Ktm Powerparts; helps with the low rev torque. a lot of mod and tuning products available for the bike. my front fork tuning: look up n10z ( www.n10z-suspension.com/en/ ). shock is waiting for this mod. shock: www.xtrig.com/products/preload seat: one modified seat for long trips. rider: ride! training! have fun!
No, it's an overpriced dual sport. You have a GS! Why would you lump that bike into this class? You already own the king of adventure bikes! There's other avenues for content.
The 1250 is not a middle weight bike by any means. The point of the video was to see if the 701 could qualify as a mid weight Adv bike. And I disagree about it being overpriced. It is certainly too much to spend on a CRF or or DRZ but if you are looking for top of the line performance out of a single cylinder thumper, I don't know that you could find a better deal. I respect your opinion though, as that's what all of this is right? Opinions.
It would’ve been a unicorn if it was made by Honda or Suzuki
Hmm, not sure how maker would influence the status of the bike, but I think that it could certainly be called a Unicorn. Thanks for watching. Cheers.
The motor will lug. Its the close ratio gearbox that's the problem. Put a bigger rear sprocket and a Rekluse Radius X and it's amazing. Also put a tower on the front.
I have a larger rear sprocket and that cleaned it up a lot. Not perfect but pretty darn good.
@@upshiftingadventures4034 How many teeth did you go up in the back?
@ipdjbt I went up two teeth
Too tall, Crap seat. End of story. Also with all respect mate if you own both a GS 1250 and a 701 I think you're probably out of touch with most bikers. Just sayin'
Yet somehow i respect the opinions of people who have experience more bikes than some kid who says a trail 50 is great for across the country; Just look it up!
why? Most bikers I know have (at least) two bikes…
Just purchased one, i'm vertically challenged at 5'7, having the dealer lower the suspension, springs, front/rear, valving, setting it up for my weight, i've decided i really do not want to pick up the pan am lol so looking forward to seeing what this escape of and when I do get it, I'm going to sign up for a two day adv course....sláinte
That’s awesome. Congrats on a fantastic new bike. Hope you have many many miles of adventuring.
I have lots of little "adventures" on my 23 701. 😂 I told myself I would never spend over 1k for the Rade Garage rally fairing but God, it would be nice. I've been trying to convince myself I need one. I'm doomed if I'm already doing that. It will be mine eventually. Need to address the low rpm fueling also. Dongle or Power Commander? Any suggestions?
I have a power commander with auto tune, Rottweiler intake, SAS and Evan canister delete. It doesn’t completely fix it but it helps. Also have a larger rear sprocket which makes a big difference. I’ve heard the fuel dongle is also very useful though. But I like the extra power. At 240 I can do 2nd gear power up wheelies.
My old stomping grounds. What a great ride. I just got done with the Mid-Atlantic BDR and loved it. I grew up in the South Dakota area but I have never been back with my bike. Enjoy your adventure!
Oh man, I absolutely loved riding out there. I didn't find anything in the way of challenging riding but there seems to be endless dirt to ride in South Dakota. You could almost go anywhere in the state without hardly ever touching pavement. And of course the scenery is top notch. You should definitely make a plan to return on the bike. It was outstanding. Cheers
It’s got to be way better than most DualSport bikes for service intervals. As far as mileage, a spare tank can fix that. I get at least 170 miles to the stock tank. We’ll work on the comfort issue.
Absolutely agree.
Thank you for the video.
You're welcome
Heading out from Boston to do the Colorado bdr just watched your video good stuff looking forward to seeing more
Let me know what you think when you’re finished. Love to hear your thoughts.
Another good one.....keep them coming...@stanforadventure
Thank you sir.
Money is never wasted on upgrading a street legal enduro, the more money spent, the more enjoyable is the bike! I invested $20K on my 2023 KTM 350 EXC-F including purchase, no regrets! Great video, thanks for sharing!
I couldn’t agree more. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great video, thanks very much
Glad you liked it!
I thought the same way, then my rear shock acted up, was replaced and Great again. 4k later rear shock went again and now KTM doesn't respond.
Yeah, my preload adjuster just starting throwing an error code. Took it in and they had to spend 4 hours on the phone with KTM figuring it out. In the end, hard reset of the system with no mechanical damage so I got away lucky. But I believe that is the price you pay for such a radical bike. Doesn’t change my opinion one bit.
What a great trip…looking forward to seeing the next video. Ride on…
More to come!
I think you said in video when orange TC light is on , TC is off ? Its the other way round. Orange light means TC is on . Wierd way of doing it , but heh , its European. Love your content. Loving my 701 here in adventureland of New Zealands South Island
So on the 701 Enduro, when you first start the bike, the TC is automatically activated and the TC light is on. Once you start to move, the TC light will go off, but the traction control is engaged. In map 1 almost know lift off is possible and the rear wheel will not be aloud to spin. In map 2 you can get a little more wheelie and there is a little more wheel spin aloud, but not much. When you push and hold the TC button for 5 seconds and disengage the Traction Control, the TC light will stay illuminated, and you can wheelie as high as you like and can spin the rear tire as much as you want. I think the theory behind have the TC light on when traction control is off is so that the rider is constantly reminded that traction control is off. Thanks so much for watching my videos, I really appreciate your support. I have another video on the 701 Enduro coming out in the next few days, be sure to check it out and let me know what you think.
I have one of these without the evo suspension, it is better for me with a lot more flexibility for a light weight, the evo is set up for some one around 75kg or at least here in the UK, may be higher for the US, dont waste your money on the evo if you can get the manual suspension, only three settings, one man, rider and pillion or rider pillion luggage, thats it, one hell of a bike though
I agree that it’s one hell of a bike, but I wouldn’t give the bad marks to the electronic suspension. I was skeptical at first also, but after two years I have to say I love it. However, the Evo suspension can be problematic when it come to electronic issues.
Does adding two teeth on the sprocket affect the speedo?
No. The speed sensor is on the front wheel. Not like the old days when it was in the transmissions.
@@upshiftingadventures4034thanks
My nav6 does the same thing,it’s called Ghosting. So a garmin zumo xt2 is my next choice!
I’m glad I made the swap. The Zumo is a far better unit for adventure riding. I’ve had zero issue with it so far.
Is the Garmin component ordered separately from Garmin? If so, are there variable specs?
Yes, the GPS is a garmin unit. You can buy from Garmin directly or through a dealer
I ran it in May of this year on a Honda CRF450X. One day, clockwise. Perfect time of year if you can avoid rain. The loop is right at 100 miles. Its only 80 miles from the start of Shaffer to the top of the Mineral Bottom switchbacks. The rest is half flat dirt rode and half pavement back to the park entrance. For the technical sections, Murphy's Hogback is long but not that difficult, unless for some reason you fall or stop. There are a few smaller technical sections usually not mentioned before Murphy's and before Hardscrabble. Hardscrabble itself is a bit more technical than Murphy's, especially if the trucks have torn it up. Have sufficient gas in case you have to turn around. I have a 3.2 gallon tank on my 450X and it gets about 50 mpg. Avoid going on a larger adventure bike unless you have some technical riding experience and are riding with other people. I suggest everyone start at Island In The Sky Visitor Center and go down the Schaffer switchbacks (as is most common) and do the trail clockwise to minimize the chance of meeting oncoming traffic on the difficult sections. If you are unloading, I suggest driving down the Shaffer Switchback road about 1/2 mile where you will find an unloading/parking area. Happy Trails!
Nice review. What are specs on the sprocket and chain you added?
I put a Dirt Tricks 48 tooth 520 pitch rear sprocket, a super lite stock size countershaft sprocket and a DID 520 gold chain.
Thanks for this. My concern with this is that changing the airbox is a big deal and should definitely require a remap. I’ve heard people complain about the size of the airbox as an “obvious design flaw” in that it could have been “a third of the size”. But we don’t know really, do we? The shape of the airbox determines the airflow to the engine and is probably co-designed with the engine map to provide a certain response at all rpms. Now you’ve replaced it with just a tube going into the throttle body, yes I can see is smaller (with rade would have been even smaller), victory! but is it? what are the potential drawbacks? I don’t know. Do you?
Rottweiler Perf suggest's a tune if you add their intake due to lean conditions at the top of the RPM range. I have a PC VI so that isn't an issue
@@upshiftingadventures4034 thanks. I’m not sure how a pc works, by a quick lookup it seems not to be available for models later than 2020
@@miro_s mine is a 2022. It is the power commander 6
@@upshiftingadventures4034 thanks I’ll look again
Aaaaaaa been waiting for this lol i'm still in the original honeymoon stage with my bike only has 2000 km and I freaking love it, the super Duke blends everything that I love about motorcycling into one machine also I'm gonna be looking at new tires pretty soon. Do you have any recommendations and by putting the slip on on? Was that difficult with the servo delete and did you run into any electrical problems?
The slip on is a very easy job, probably less then an hour is you are mechanically inclined. There butterfly is down stream of the muffler so that is not a concern. I did not do a the servo delete but if you do, I know Rottweiler Performance makes a dongle to turn off the F1 light, but I'm not sure they are making one for the Gen 3 SD. There is not a lot of perf parts for the Gen 3. The tire's I'm running right now are the Dunlop Sportmax Q3's and I like them a lot.
@@upshiftingadventures4034 thanks for the reply!! like I said, love the videos and love the bike. I'm having a best time of my life one more quick question if you don't mind, I saw a video where the guy changed the shifter lever up to a different screw hole says it helps with the shifter. Have you heard about this?
Thanks for this! I"m in Fort Collins, have been doing back country stuff on a triumph tiger 900 and itching to get a powerful yet agile bike for the canyons. Was thinking about the 890R but am a bigger rider as well at 6'1" 210 lbs, after watching this you've got me convinced to just go for the 1290. Also, thank you for the Fay Meyers rec, I"ll swing by there on my way to the Springs next week!
Yeah, don’t even mess around with the 890. It’s a great bike (my wife has one) but it’s not for taller riders. The 1290 is the pinnacle of Canyon carvers. When you go by Fey Myers, ask for Mike and tell him I sent you.
I bought my 23 701 last fall and had Rally pegs before I left the dealership. Next 6 mods I'll add in order will be rear shock pre load adjuster, rear rack, gas cap, mirrors, skid plate and seat. Maybe a wind screen and some soft luggage after that. Engine mods are secondary to me and if I really want to knock weight off the best thing for me would be to eat less.
170mi!?! I wish! My bike is nearly stock (apart the muffler) and I do about 110mi before the light comes on.
On my bike the fuel light comes on with anywhere from 50 to 70 miles to empty so it still works out to about 170
@@upshiftingadventures4034 interesting. never tried to measure how long it’ll go after the fuel light. When it comes on I usually panic and dash for a service station… 😂
Hiw do you feel it compares to the streetfighter v4s that you recently reviewed?
Honestly, I’ll stick with the 1290. The Ducati is a work of art for sure. I absolutely loved it, but for me the down low grunt and off the line power is what I love. And it’s at a lower price point so win/win
Watch your video's all the time I have the same bike also . I have a high dollar steering WP also. It's better than stock but its not perfect the new one you purchased did it fix high speed wobble and would you share where to buy it ? Also does it need a different mounting bracket? I noticed you rode the 1390 is it better than our bike? Thanks for your time
I really think the Muopo steering damper is a great piece of gear. Fixed the problem right up. The new 1390 is a fantastic bike but I like the 1290 better. The new one doesn’t have the raw, insane power of the 1290’s
Hi Great build, and informative vid! One question - is there a reason you’ve not gone for the Rade Garage rally tower? This seems to be a standard upgrade on most 701’s/690r so I’m just wondering (or looking for an excuse not to get one, as they’re pricey!) why you didn’t get one.
I like the Rade tower a lot but I decided not to go that route because I tend to ride the 701 like a dirt bike and so I crash it a lot also. I figure the tower would just get busted up.
Got ya, thanks 👍🏼
I’m riding a 2019 KTM 690 Enduro with Rade Garage range extender and air filter with Arrow can. I’m half way through a 4,000 mile trip in the US on TAT and BDR with 50:50 on and off road. I’m averaging 65 mpg (US). I’m keeping pace with my buddy on a Tiger 900. My safe range is over 300 miles. An amazing machine. The seat is a Seat Concepts and a Nomad tower which I think may help the aerodynamics. I have a slight pull back on my Fatbars handlebars and would add vibration damping for longer use on the highways. All in all a superb machine.
Sounds like a great set up. Have you had any mech issues at all?
@@upshiftingadventures4034 We had a scary moment at just 63 miles when we pulled in to fill the Tiger. A massive oil leak from the left side. It turned out that the bolts holding the sprocket cover were loose and oil was making it past the clutch slave cylinder. Disaster averted! It had only just occurred from the lack of oil on the tyre and elsewhere. But otherwise it’s been excellent. It needs an oil top up but that’s expected. The only issue now is to replace the Anakee Wild rear which is getting pretty low. 6 to 8 hours riding a day and great. Ok, happy to get off by the end of the day but no lasting pain!
Great summation, planning to do 5/6 this summer on my R1250GS as quick excursions from the Denver area as well.
The 1250 is perfect for 5 and 6.
